Chapter Fourteen

After all the excitement, going back to classes was quite disconcerting. I wasn’t sure how much everyone else knew about what had happened, but I caught people looking at me with odd expressions multiple times. Could be just that the non-shifter student had missed a lot of school, and maybe they wondered whether I was being singled out for special treatment. But somehow, I doubted that.

The Midnight was a hangout for many of the older academy students. Despite the fact that our conversations with Jo had taken place in the back room, we had moved through the bar area with Storm for one thing and others might have overheard. But I suspected the main leak of our private information was the witches. Since we’d returned to school, there had been plenty of time for Eliphas to have contacted them, and it didn’t take a genius or a specialist in paranormal beings to recognize that they would not be pleased or, most likely discreet.

Still, no one had come right out and admitted knowing their business, and I’d call that a win. No one except, of course, for Raven. My roommate had been out of the loop some of the time, but when she asked me what was going on, I never hesitated to tell her all about it.

“I was so worried about you,” she said as we walked to class my first day back. “I even went to the headmistress, but she only said you were okay and to just mind my own business.” She halted and laid a hand on my arm. “But, in my opinion, best friends are each other’s business.”

“I’m your best friend?” Sure…off topic, but the spurt of happiness it sent through my bloodstream was unignorable. “Really?”

“Sure, of course. Who else would be. Not that Onyx for sure.”

Interesting… “Not Onyx?”

“No way. I thought we were getting close, not just like you and me, but you know…well I’m not even sure. Let’s change the subject.” Her cheeks flushed; she studied the floor beneath her feet.

I knew what she meant, but if she wanted to talk about it, she would. Onyx was a real puzzle, and even being a coworker could be complex, much less a friend or more. “All right. What shall we talk about, then?” I started walking again, and Raven did as well.

“Your love life. How is it going, and what do I hear about your mates being held hostage and attacked by witches and vampires and all sorts of magical creatures?”

“Oh, bestie, that’s a long, long story. Class is about to start and, as you can imagine, I can’t afford to miss another one. Can we talk later?”

“Just tell me,” she asked, “is everyone all right now?”

“Yes…no. Oh gosh.” We had arrived at the place our paths diverged, and the other students were pouring around us and down the hallway. “Really long story. But just to keep you from worrying, we’re basically okay for the moment. Nobody is dying or about to grow fangs or drink any more flower petal water.
